The Bih Jolokia, which originates from India, was considered one of the hottest chillies in the world for many years and still delights the palates of many chilli enthusiasts. To get really ripe fruits, you should place the Bih Jolokia in a very sunny and warm place, otherwise the ripening time will be considerably longer. During ripening, the pods change colour from green to orange to red and are a real ornament for every balcony or garden. With their fruity aroma, the fruits are well suited for spicy soups and sauces.
Germination and growing
To get this variety to germinate, you should provide them with an environment with a temperature between 25 and 30 °C. A heated greenhouse is ideal for this. Whether you pre-germinate the seeds in two layers of kitchen roll or let them grow directly in soil is entirely up to you. When you place the seedlings in pots, you should use a well-fertilised and airy soil and make sure that the water does not accumulate. Chilli plants need a lot of sun for their development and certain minimum temperatures for the ripening of the fruits. Therefore, place them in a suitable spot where they get at least 6-8 hours of sun and plant them in pots rather than flower pots. This makes it easier to bring them indoors on days with temperatures below 12 °C in early autumn - so the fruits can still ripen despite the sometimes long ripening period.
