The Bih Jolokia Yellow was bred from the classic red Bih Jolokia and has taken over its original characteristics. Around one million Scoville and the fruity aroma speak for themselves and with the ripe pods you can make great hot sauces or yellow chilli powder. This variety needs a lot of sun and warmth - an unfavourable location only prolongs the long ripening period unnecessarily.
Germination and growing
To get this variety to germinate, you should offer them an environment with a temperature between 25 and 30 °C. A heated greenhouse is ideal for this. Whether you pre-germinate the seeds in two layers of kitchen roll or let them grow directly in soil is entirely up to you. When you place the seedlings in pots, you should use a well-fertilised and airy soil and make sure that the water does not accumulate. Chilli plants need a lot of sun for their development and certain minimum temperatures for the ripening of the fruits. Therefore, place them in a suitable spot where they get at least 6-8 hours of sun and plant them in pots rather than flower pots. This makes it easier to bring them indoors in early autumn on days with temperatures below 12 °C - so the fruits can still ripen despite the sometimes long ripening period.
