The Brazilian Starfish Chilli is particularly suitable for growing in the garden or on large balconies. Given a suitable pot and good care, it can grow up to two metres tall and relatively sprawling. The pretty fruits are shaped like small starfish and ripen from their original green to a rich red. With their fruity, slightly sweet flavour, the pods are good for seasoning food, drying or even raw for eating straight.
Germination and breeding
To get this variety to germinate, you should offer them an environment with a temperature between 21 and 28 °C.A heated greenhouse is ideal for this. Whether you pre-germinate the seeds in two layers of kitchen roll or let them grow directly in soil is entirely up to you. When you place the seedlings in pots, you should use a well-fertilised and airy soil and make sure that the water does not accumulate. Chilli plants need a lot of sun for their development and certain minimum temperatures for the ripening of the fruits. Therefore, place them in a suitable spot where they get at least 6-8 hours of sun and plant them in pots rather than flower pots. This makes it easier to bring them indoors on days with temperatures below 12 °C in early autumn - so the fruits can still ripen despite the sometimes long ripening period.
