The Carolina Reaper lives up to its name. It is considered the hottest chilli variety in the world and is also listed as such in the Guinness Book, where this creation by Ed Currie knocked the Trinidad Scorpion Moruga off its throne in 2013. Find a good spot for it, as plenty of warmth and sun will help the Carolina Reaper develop and increase yields. If it is not in a favourable position, the ripening period of 120 days can be extended even further. An unbelievable 2.2 million Scoville have already been measured for this variety, in our latitudes a mighty 1.6 million can often be achieved. So be careful when eating and processing this variety! Those who can withstand the spiciness can look forward to fruity flavours. In addition to processing fresh fruit, the Carolina Reaper is great for making spicy sauces or grinding the dried pods into powder. As the fruits are quite fleshy, you should always cut them open when drying.

Germination and growing

To get this variety to germinate, you should provide them with an environment with a temperature between 24 and 30 °C. A heated greenhouse is ideal for this. Whether you pre-germinate the seeds in two layers of kitchen roll or let them grow directly in soil is entirely up to you. When you place the seedlings in pots, you should use a well-fertilised and airy soil and make sure that the water does not accumulate. Chilli plants need a lot of sun for their development and certain minimum temperatures for the ripening of the fruits. Therefore, place them in a suitable spot where they will get at least 6-8 hours of sun and plant them in pots rather than flower pots. This makes it easier to bring them indoors in early autumn on days with temperatures below 12 °C - so the fruits can still ripen despite the sometimes long ripening period.
