The Filius Blue Ornamental Chilli with its fruits is not only suitable for seasoning food, but also as a real eye-catcher. It produces many round chillies that start out green, then turn purple and finally red. The heat decreases somewhat towards the end of ripening, so if you like it particularly hot, you should harvest them before they are completely red. As this variety does not grow quite as big, but has many flowers and very pretty foliage with small, partly dark-edged leaves, it is very decorative and well suited for sunny windowsills. As well as being used as a fresh chilli, the small round pods are also excellent for drying and then processing into chilli powder.
Germination and growing
To get this variety to germinate, you should provide them with an environment with a temperature between 20 and 28 °C. A heated greenhouse is ideal for this. Whether you pre-germinate the seeds in two layers of kitchen roll or let them grow directly in soil is entirely up to you. When you place the seedlings in pots, you should use a well-fertilised and airy soil and make sure that the water does not accumulate. Chilli plants need a lot of sun for their development and certain minimum temperatures for the ripening of the fruits. Place them in a suitable spot where they will get at least 6-8 hours of sun and plant them in pots rather than flower pots. This makes it easier to bring them indoors in early autumn on days with temperatures below 12 °C - so the fruits can still ripen despite the sometimes long ripening period.
