For friends of the delicious habanero taste, but who want to do without the distinct spiciness of the originals, the Habanada Red Chilli was bred in the USA a few years ago. The name is a creation of Habanero and Nada (Spanish for "nothing"), the latter of course referring to the non-existent spiciness. Like all habaneros, the Habanada Red loves sun and heat, and the ripe pods can be enjoyed raw or used to flavour mild dishes.
Germination and growing
To get this variety to germinate, you should provide them with an environment with a temperature between 22 and 28 °C. A heated greenhouse is ideal for this. Whether you pre-germinate the seeds in two layers of kitchen roll or let them grow directly in soil is entirely up to you. When you place the seedlings in pots, you should use a well-fertilised and airy soil and make sure that the water does not accumulate. Chilli plants need a lot of sun for their development and certain minimum temperatures for the ripening of the fruits. Therefore, place them in a suitable spot where they get at least 6-8 hours of sun and plant them in pots rather than flower pots. This makes it easier to bring them indoors on days with temperatures below 12 °C in early autumn - so the fruits can still ripen despite the sometimes long ripening period.
