The Lemon Drop Chilli is a true miracle of growth and yield. Under favourable conditions, it can grow up to two metres high and then bear masses of bright yellow chilli pods. The name of this variety refers not only to the yellow colour of the fruits, but also to the pleasant lemon aroma of the ripe chillies. Due to the flavour and their balanced heat, Lemon Drop chillies are well suited for seasoning dishes and salsas. If you like it hot, you can add this interesting flavour to salads by adding small pieces of pulp. These thin-skinned chillies also work well as a chilli powder. With its bright yellow colour, it is an eye-catcher on any table.
Germination and growing
To get this variety to germinate, you should offer them an environment with a temperature between 22 and 28 °C. A heated greenhouse is ideal for this. Whether you pre-germinate the seeds in two layers of kitchen roll or let them grow directly in soil is entirely up to you. When you place the seedlings in pots, you should use a well-fertilised and airy soil and make sure that the water does not accumulate. Chilli plants need a lot of sun for their development and certain minimum temperatures for the ripening of the fruits. Therefore, place them in a suitable spot where they will get at least 6-8 hours of sun and plant them in pots rather than flower pots. This makes it easier to bring them indoors in early autumn on days with temperatures below 12 °C - so the fruits can still ripen despite the sometimes long ripening period.
