As the name suggests, monkey-face chillies sometimes resemble a small squatting monkey or a monkey's face. In any case, the pods have a rather fruity, exotic flavour and a fragrance somewhat similar to that of mango. The pretty white flowers grow up to 1 cm and then form striking fruits that change colour from green to yellow. The medium heat is good for flavouring a wide variety of dishes and as the Monkey Face Chilli does not grow too big, it is a great pot plant.
Germination and growing
To get this variety to germinate, you should provide them with an environment with a temperature between 20 and 28 °C. A heated greenhouse is ideal for this. Whether you pre-germinate the seeds in two layers of kitchen roll or let them grow directly in soil is entirely up to you. When you place the seedlings in pots, you should use a well-fertilised and airy soil and make sure that the water does not accumulate. Chilli plants need a lot of sun for their development and certain minimum temperatures for the ripening of the fruits. Place them in a suitable spot where they will get at least 6-8 hours of sun and plant them in pots rather than flower pots. This makes it easier to bring them indoors in early autumn on days with temperatures below 12 °C - so the fruits can still ripen despite the sometimes long ripening period.
