The Orange Lantern Chilli is a very decorative variety from South America. As it doesn't grow too big, it's easy to grow in a pot in a sunny spot indoors. As the Orange Lantern is not very demanding, it should be easy to grow, even for beginners. With the right care, it produces many drop-shaped or lantern-shaped fruits that turn very nicely from dark green to purple to orange. Their aromatic flavour matches the distinct pungency and they are well suited for pickling or salsas.
Germination and growing
To get this variety to germinate, you should offer them an environment with a temperature between 22 and 28 °C. A heated greenhouse is ideal for this. Whether you pre-germinate the seeds in two layers of kitchen roll or let them grow directly in soil is entirely up to you. When you place the seedlings in pots, you should use a well-fertilised and airy soil and make sure that the water does not accumulate. Chilli plants need a lot of sun for their development and certain minimum temperatures for the ripening of the fruits. Place them in a suitable spot where they will get at least 6-8 hours of sun and plant them in pots rather than flower pots. This makes it easier to bring them indoors in early autumn on days with temperatures below 12 °C - so the fruits can still ripen despite the sometimes long ripening period.
