Germination and Growing:
The seeds of this plant need temperatures of about 15° to germinate. Until germination, the seeds should always be kept slightly moist, regardless of whether you pre-germinate them or germinate the seeds directly in or on potting soil. It is generally helpful to use a heated mini-greenhouse to increase the germination rate and to provide the seedlings with a favourable climate for their first growth phase. After about 2 weeks you should be able to see the first seedlings, shortly after which you can plant them outside (frost-free).
Japanese Salt Herb - Fresh Aroma for Modern Cuisine
In Japan, this interesting plant is called Okahijiki, which means land alga. As it settles on seashores in its native country, the saltweed likes constantly moist and nutrient-rich soil. To ensure that the aroma is really salty and strong, you should add just under one percent table salt to the watering water every few weeks. You can harvest the fast-growing Japanese saltwort continuously until the first frost and eat the young shoots raw. Older parts of the plant, however, are better suited for frying. Indoors, it is basically possible to cultivate the salt weed all year round and thus to prepare an interesting salad even in winter.
