Plant Seeds, Katsura Tree
- small red flowers in spring
- perennial
- hardy
- grows up to 3.5 meters tall (outdoors)
The seeds of this plant need temperatures between 20 and 22° to germinate. Until germination, the seeds should always be kept slightly moist, regardless of whether you pre-germinate them or germinate the seeds directly on growing soil. To increase the germination rate, it is best to place the seeds in the refrigerator for 14 days. It is generally helpful to use a heated mini-greenhouse to increase the germination rate and to provide the seedlings with a favourable climate for their first growth phase. After about 2 to 6 weeks, you should be able to spot the first seedlings.
Scented beauty from Japan
The katsura tree in Asia, called gingerbread tree in other countries, can be cultivated well indoors in tubs or outdoors in the ground. It is fully hardy and can reach heights of several meters outdoors. As a flat-rooted tree, it needs enough water, especially in summer, so you should water free-standing trees if necessary. The Katsura (gingerbread) tree earns its name in autumn: when the foliage turns a lovely shade of red and brown and falls off, it gives off a pleasant smell reminiscent of gingerbread when damp. The perfect way to get in the mood for the coming winter and cozy Christmas evenings with fragrant Christmas biscuits.
