Plant Seeds, Sausage Tree
Germination and cultivation:
The seeds of this plant need temperatures above 25 °C to germinate. Until germination, the seeds should always be kept slightly moist, regardless of whether you pre-germinate them or place them directly in growing soil to germinate. It is best to let the seeds soak in water for one or two days. In general it is helpful to use a heated mini-greenhouse, so you increase the germination rate and the seedlings have a favourable climate for their first growth phase. After about 3 to 6 weeks you should be able to spot the first seedlings.
Beautiful flowers and striking fruits
The sausage tree bears attractive purple-red flowers between June and August. These open mainly in the late evening and at night, so in their native habitat they are particularly interesting for nectar birds. The sausage tree got its name because of its unusual fruits, which resemble long sausages. In West Africa, they grow up to 60 cm long and weigh several kilograms. There, traditional medicine is made from the seeds and bark, and the sausage-shaped fruits are particularly popular with elephants. As the sausage tree is not winter-hardy, you should plant it in a tub and put it in a place with at least 12 - 15° in winter. In summer, it likes a warm and sunny spot, ideally a conservatory.
