Plant Seeds, Star Anise
- Flowering: March -May
- perennial
- not hardy
- Grows up to 18 meters tall (in countries of origin)
Germination and Growing:
The seeds of this plant need temperatures between 22 and 27° to germinate. Until germination, the seeds should always be kept slightly moist, regardless of whether you pre-germinate them or germinate the seeds directly in or on potting soil. It is generally helpful to use a heated mini-greenhouse to increase the germination rate and to provide the seedlings with a favourable climate for their first growth phase. After about 4 to 8 weeks, you should be able to spot the first seedlings.
True Star Anise - Evergreen Tree and Spice from Asia
As a supplier of spices and as a medicinal plant, star anise has been known in China for thousands of years and is highly valued there. In our country, it is more suitable as an ornamental shrub, as it takes about fifteen years for the first fruits to form. Star anise also prefers a warm climate with high humidity - greenhouses and large display cases are therefore ideal. Depending on the area, it can stand outdoors in summer, but should then be sprayed with water from top to bottom more often. In winter, it is best left indoors at temperatures between 15 and 18°. The star anise is an evergreen plant with large, magnolia-like flowers.
