Plant Seeds, Strawberry Tree
- Flowering: October - December
- perennial
- conditionally hardy
- grows up to 2 meters high
Germination and growing:
The seeds of this plant need temperatures around 20° to germinate. Until germination, the seeds should always be kept slightly moist, regardless of whether you pre-germinate them or let the seeds germinate directly in or on growing soil. Generally, it is helpful to use a heated mini-greenhouse to increase the germination rate and provide the seedlings with a favourable climate for their first growth phase. After up to 12 weeks you should be able to see the first seedlings.
The evergreen fruit giver - the strawberry tree
The strawberry tree originates from the Mediterranean region, where it was already known in antiquity and was mentioned by Ovid, Virgil and Pliny, among others. In the meantime, it has spread along the coasts of the mild Gulf Stream as far as Ireland and also thrives here. You should give it a sunny spot and water it neither too much nor too little. Keep the soil only slightly moist, avoid waterlogging and water that is too calcareous. Young plants need acidic substrates with a pH between 4 and 6 and are not hardy. After a few years, however, the strawberry tree can even tolerate light frost. It flowers late in the year and sometimes keeps its flowers in winter - as the fruits ripen for a long time, you will find white flowers, small red berries and green foliage on this tree at the same time. You can prepare the ripe and sweet fruits or eat them raw. In Portugal, they make a brandy from it called medronho.
