Plant Seeds, Tea Plant
- Flowering: October - February
- perennial
- conditionally hardy
- Grows up to 4 meters high
Germination and Growing:
The seeds of this plant need temperatures between 22 and 25° to germinate. Until germination, the seeds should always be kept slightly moist, regardless of whether you pre-germinate them or germinate the seeds directly in or on growing soil. It is generally helpful to use a heated mini-greenhouse to increase the germination rate and to provide the seedlings with a favourable climate for their first growth phase. After about 4 to 8 weeks you should be able to spot the first seedlings.
Tea - An Ancient Asian Tradition
This tea variety (var. sinensis) is traditionally grown in Darjeeling (Himalayas) and China and is somewhat more cold-resistant than other varieties. With a little skill you can produce your own tea, this variety produces a very aromatic, bright tea. As a winter bloomer, the true tea bush produces 3 - 4 cm large, yellowish-white flowers in autumn. It can grow up to four meters tall outdoors, but it is usually pruned back more often, resulting in a compact plant about 150 cm tall. In a sheltered location, the tea can even withstand a few degrees below zero in winter; in a pot, you can overwinter it indoors at 12-18° in a bright location. A slightly acidic soil, e.g. rhododendron soil, is suitable as a substrate. The watering water should not be too chalky - it is best to use rainwater.
