A Mediterranean classic for your windowsill.
Originally found in Africa, the Tamarind (Latin: Tamarindus indica) has found a home in nearly all tropical regions. It characteristically has alternate, pinnately compound (feather-like) leaves. The Tamarind can be grown as an evergreen container plant, and in the right conditions (in a sunny location), it can form abundant, yellowish, intensely-aromatic blossom, which matures into brown legumes (around 10-20 cm long) when pollinated by insects. The seeds within these legumes are embedded in a soft, sweet pulp, which can be eaten raw as a sweet treat.
Grown as a Bonsai, the Tamarind stands out thanks to its delicate appearance and fine branches. It is only mildly tolerant to pruning, so you are better off binding it with crop wire to achieve the desired shape.
Usage: Indoor. Year-round in a non-heated conservatory. Outdoor cultivation only possible from May to September, must be stored in a non-heated indoor space during winter.
