Pumpkin Seeds, Butternut-Squash "Zenith"
- Harvest: October - November
- annual
- not hardy
- Fruits can weigh up to 3 kg
Germination and Cultivation:
The seeds of this plant need temperatures between 15 and 20° to germinate. Until germination, the seeds should always be kept slightly moist, regardless of whether you pre-germinate them or germinate the seeds directly in or on potting soil. It is generally helpful to use a heated mini-greenhouse to increase the germination rate and to provide the seedlings with a favourable climate for their first growth phase. After about 3 to 12 days you should be able to spot the first seedlings.
Tasty! One pumpkin for many recipes
The butternut squash originates from the USA, but is now also very well-known and popular here. And not without reason, because it is suitable for countless dishes. Whether roasted, as a casserole, stuffed and baked or as a soup - its nutty, slightly sweet taste and firm flesh tempt cooks all over the world to come up with ever new creations. If you plant your pumpkins outside, make sure they get a sunny spot and nutrient-rich soil. Soil mixed with compost and regular fertilising will ensure rapid growth and large fruits. Due to the large leaves, the butternut squash needs a relatively large amount of water, so you should water regularly, especially in hot weather. In autumn, when the pumpkins have a firm skin, they are ripe for harvesting - just the right time for a hot pumpkin soup or a steaming casserole!
