An exotic set of monsters for your windowsill.
3 types of carnivorous plants in a propagation set.
Insects beware! This set allows you to rid your home of pesky insects from your windowsill, in an organic and rather decorative way.
Including seeds for 3 different types of carnivorous plant, a special growing medium, a small propagator and 3 plant pots with saucers (for later cultivation), this set contains everything that a grower needs to start growing their carnivorous plants straight away!
Brief overview of the three types of plant included:
Venus fly trap (Latin: Dionaea muscipula): Certainly the most famous carnivorous plant, which snaps up unsuspecting insects with its eyelid-like leaves. An exciting process: If an insect is successfully lured into the trap, the leaves close completely, and the cavity is filled with digestive enzymes, which slowly disintegrate the prey over several days. When this is done, the leaf pair opens up again and the plant can snap up another insect.
Cape Sundew (Latin: Drosera capensis): A beautiful and delicate carnivore that lures it prey with fine, shiny drops of nectar (hence the name), which act as inescapable glue traps. The sticky droplets sit on countless fine hairs, which sprout from long, tentacle-like leaves; when an insect gets stuck, the tentacle slowly rolls itself in (over several hours) and starts to digest the prey.
Purple/yellow pitcher plant (Latin: Sarracenia purpurea/flava): Also very decorative, the pitcher plants are very deadly to unsuspecting creepy-crawlies. This set contains a mixture of purple and yellow pitcher plants. They form tubular leaves with glossy interiors, which attract insects with their shape and aroma. The leaves are filled with a mixture of water and digestive enzymes, which the insects quickly drown in and are then slowly digested.
Tip: All of these carnivorous plants are native to wetland environments and are sensitive to dry air and hard water. The mini greenhouse included in the set provides the ideal climate for propagation. Thereafter, you should find a place that is not too dry and ensure that the plants do not dry out. To help the plants to thrive, a larger mini-greenhouse would also come in handy.
To show your carnivorous plants some love, you can collect rain water to water them with and spray them regularly. Filter the rain water (e.g. through a coffee filter) and allow it to come to room temperature. No extra fertilisers are necessary, as the plants get their nutrients solely from their prey.
Usage: Year-round indoor. Do not store in a space that is too cold or dry. For optimal conditions, use a mini-greenhouse or terrarium with an air humidity of 60 to 80%.
